Teammates salute to Dravid's contribution

The cricketing society came together to raise a toast for the retired Rahul Dravid as they fondly remembered the huge contribution of the batting stalwart.

Accolades such as "huge pillar" of Indian cricket "greatest number 3 bats" and one of the "best cricketers and ambassadors" poured in from his former and current teammates who paid glowing tribute in a star-studded felicitation function.

Former captains Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, current skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and VVS Laxman were among those who spoke at the function attended by a galaxy of former cricketers, BCCI officials and other dignitary.

While relating him as a "huge pillar", Ganguly said Dravid, who announce his retirement from international cricket on March 9, was a great ambassador of the game.

"He was one of the huge pillar through which Indian cricket went forward. He is one of the greatest batsmen not just in India but in world cricket," Ganguly said.

"You (Dravid) played in an era when Indian cricket went from strength to strength."

Ganguly rated his 180 against Australia at the Eden Gardens in 2001 as Dravid's best knock.

"As far his best knocks are concerned, there are bound to be debates. But as I had said always, the one at Eden Gardens is the best. Though I rate the knocks overseas highly, I think the knock at Eden with VVS (Laxman) not only established him in world cricket but was also important for Indian cricket.

"I am happy that he could take the decision on his own. His contribution to Indian cricket isn't finished with the number of runs he has scored or the catches he has taken, he is a great ambassador."

The left-hander said he was lucky to have Dravid as his deputy when he was the captain of the Indian team.

"I was lucky to have you as vice-captain for five years, the work behind you and John (Wright) did."

Recalling his long career, Dravid said that Dhoni's team winning the ODI World Cup last year was a "special moment" for him.

"Mahi, you have to be proud of what you have done with this Indian team. It was a special moment for me to see the group of boys holding the World Cup last year after 2007 (when India was knocked out in the first round).

"It was a memorable moment. It was inspiring, as a 10-year-old, to see Kapil Dev lift the World Cup, and to do it again in 2011, was special. I know you have inspired a lot of 10-year-olds, there are challenges but you have the right temperament to take the legacy of Indian team forward."

Dravid said having spent so much time with the team; he will now miss being part of the Indian dressing room.

"I will miss being part of the dressing room, the banter, the camaraderie but not so much the rap music," Dravid said in a lighter vein.

The former Indian captain said that he had made a pact with himself that he would not cry in any of the functions, and it was "tested to the limit" in the last two-three weeks.

Kumble, with whom Dravid combined to affect a number of dismissals, felt it would be difficult for anyone to emulate the cricketer. "It's been a great partnership with you Rahul. When we look back we can gladly say we will only remember the wonderful memories. I just spoke about the 55 catches you have taken (off my bowling).

"When his first son Samit was born, somebody sms-ed saying caught Dravid bowled Kumble. But his son cannot be Rahul Dravid. It would be easier for his son to take 2 wickets than score the number of runs he has scored, just like it would be easier for my son to have a batting average of 18," Kumble said.

"All of us know how he is as a person. During the evening-outs on tours he would know exactly what I hated. He was at times lost in his own thoughts, probably thinking about how he would beat the next day or analysing the day's proceedings. I know in the next couple of months he would be busy with the IPL. I tell you it’s going to get busier."

Dravid ended his Test career with 13,288 runs -- behind only Tendulkar -- in 164 matches, with 36 hundreds and 63 half centuries at an average of 52.31, the 270 against Pakistan being his highest score. In the 50-over format, he scored 10,889 runs from 344 ODIs with 12 centuries and 83 half centuries at an average of 39.16.

Laxman, who has been involved in innumerable match-winning partnerships with Dravid, termed the latter as an "all-time great".

"It is a great occasion in the presence of the legends and the Indian greats of cricket to celebrate the end of the illustrious career of one of the all-time greats of the game. A great friend and a colleague.

"I will definitely be missing you in the dressing room. When I first met you as a 16-year-old, playing for Karnataka Under-19, I was impressed with your passion for the game and your style. We then went on to play for India and I cherish our relationship that blossomed over the years.

"In 1996, Rahul made his debut at Lord's where he got out after scoring 95. He must have been really disappointed not to have got his century. But he proved how much effort, hard work and pride he puts into his game when he scored his century at Lord's in 2011. Celebrations showed how much it meant for him to score it at the Lord's for his country.

Laxman recalled the sacrifices Dravid made in the interest of the team.

"He has always been a very selfless cricketer. And that was proved by the various roles he has donned as a cricketer over the years. Right from opening the batting to keeping, he has always showed that for him team comes first.

"All the best to Rahul as he prepares to spend the time with his lovely family. I would also like to congratulate his family for the upbringing and the way he has been. Even after achieving so much he has always remained grounded. I am sure he would contribute to Indian cricket in the future also."

Dhoni spoke about how different was Dravid in terms of showing aggression.

"At a time when it is considered that aggression is verbal, he never said a word to the opposition. He showed the aggression through taking a catch or staying at the crease and channelise the discomfort and aggression in the best possible manner.

"He is one of the greatest to play the game and the greatest to play at number three. He is someone who has got most catches. He was always ready to do anything for the country and the team when it came to opening the batting, wicket keeping, or fielding at silly point or at the slips."

Dhoni also said that Dravid would easily overcome difficult phases.

"India lost in the first round in the 2007 World Cup and then there was a phase was we won 20-22 matches chasing and Rahul Bhai has been a part of both. He was someone who would walk through the obstacle.

"As a wicket keeper, he has taken some catches which many regular keepers wouldn't have. It is a tribute from a lot of youngsters who have learned from Jammy. Not to forget he could play most of the sports well, be it soccer or badminton. He is a true gentleman,"

Coming back to Ganguly, the left-hander remembered the century Dravid hit in his early days, against Bengal.

"In our early days, I remember on an ordinary wicket, he got a hundred. I remember in 1990 he debuted for Karnataka and scored a hundred against Bengal.

"It's good to see you leading a side now (Rajasthan Royals in IPL) and hope you come back for the next season too. It's been an honour and pleasure to share some wonderful, tough moments," Ganguly said.

Brutal Pollard help West Indies get series lead

West Indies 294 for 7 (Pollard 102, Barath 41) hit Australia 252 all out (Lee 59, Hussey 57) by 42 runs

Kieron Pollard at his most cruel left Australia with an insuperable challenge at the Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia as West Indies took a 2-1 lead with one to play in an ODI series that is rivalling their wildest dreams. Pollard produced a memorable display of power striking, 102 slugged from 70 balls to conquer an Australian side that West Indies had come to regard as virtually unbeatable.

After a demoralizing run next to Australia of 13 defeats in 14 ODIs (the other being a no-result), West Indies now have two wins and a tie from their last three games. No side had ever scored more on this ground batting second than West Indies' 284 for 5 to beat England in 2004 and Australia had minute chance to buck the trend once they had lost half their side for 112.

Kohli demolish Pakistan in record chase

India 330 for 4 (Kohli 183, Rohit 68, Tendulkar 52) beat Pakistan 329 for 6 (Hafeez 105, Jamshed 112, Younis 52) by six wickets

Virat Kohli destroyed a career-best 183 to power India to a critical six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup one-day tournament in Dhaka on Sunday.

The in-form batsman hit one six and 22 fours in his explosive 148-ball knock. It was his third century in four matches and helped India accomplish the stiff 330-run target with 13 balls to spare.

Nasir Jamshed earlier hit a 104-ball 112 for his maiden one-day century and Mohammad Hafeez made a 113-ball 105 to help Pakistan post a challenging total.

Pakistan made it to the final despite the defeat, finishing their league engagements with nine points from three games, while India (eight points from three games) and Bangladesh (four from two) are still in contention.
Bangladesh need to win their final league match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday to knock India out.

The day-night match was the first between the two teams since the high-profile World Cup semi-final at Mohali last March, which India won on their way to clinching the showpiece title.

Kohli and opener Sachin Tendulkar put India on course for the remarkable victory with a 133-run stand for the second wicket after the second-ball dismissal of Gautam Gambhir.

Tendulkar, who became the first plaer to score 100 international centuries on Friday, looked in good form.
Kohli, whose previous best was an unbeaten 133, received valuable support from Rohit Sharma who made an impressive 68 in a 172-run stand for the third wicket.

West Indies finish five-year deficiency

West Indies 163 for 5 in 38.2 overs (Pollard 47*) hit Australia 154 for 9 in 40 overs (David Hussey 37, Narine 4-27) by five wickets on D/L method

Kingstown, March 18, 2012 (AFP) - Big-hitting Kieron Pollard blasted a usually muscular 47 as West Indies clinched their first win in almost six years over Australia when they took the second one-dayer by five wickets on Sunday.

In a match abridged to 40 over a side because of rain, Australia struggled to 154 for nine beneath overcast conditions with West Indies reaching their Duckworth-Lewis goal of 158 with 10 balls remaining.

Pollard top-scored with 47, an innings which featured four huge sixes, one of which, off spinner Xavier Doherty, cleared the Arnos Vale stands and ended on the runway of the neighboring St Vincent airport.

Carlton Baugh had the honors of hitting the winning runs, another six off the hapless Doherty which flew over midwicket as the home side finished on 163 for five.

Dwyane Bravo also played a crucial role, making 30 in a fifth-wicket organization of 64 with Pollard which swung the game the West Indies' way after they had lost opening Kieran Powell to a first ball lbw off Brett Lee.

"It's a good feeling, the team played much better today, the bowlers did well once more and there was much more responsibility when chasing the runs," said West Indies captain Darren Sammy.

"It was a total team effort. All in all we were searching for a win and we are glad we got over the line. From the last game, when we batted, there was not much change; today we did what we had to do and I'm just happy we won one."

Australian captain Shane Watson admits that his batsmen had come up short. "In the end we were 20-30 runs short. Unfortunately we weren't able to get big sufficient partnerships through the start or middle," said Watson.

"Once the sun got on the wicket it seemed to settle a little more but that's the large challenge of playing in the West Indies and we have to adjust a little better. It's about getting the balance of the batting -- the wickets are a little different from home."

Sachin Tendulkar make world record : He scored 100th international century

Sachin Tendulkar has scored his 100th international century, in India's Asia Cup ODI alongside Bangladesh in Mirpur. The extraordinary landmark was achieved after 33 international innings without a hundred. It was Tendulkar's 49th ODI century, his first against Bangladesh, to go with his 51 Test hundreds.

Sachin Tendulkar

It was one of his slower hundreds, as he took 138 balls to reach the hundred. The publicity around Tendulkar's 100th international century began during last year's World Cup, when two hundreds in the group stages put him on 99 international hundreds. However, he failed to get to three figures on India's tour of England, the home series against West Indies and the tour of Australia, and has finally achieve the feat in Bangladesh.

Clarke to play for Pune Warriors in IPL 5.

Having shunned the Indian Premier League so far, Australia skipper Michael Clarke can turn out for Pune Warriors in the competition's fifth edition opening next month. This was claim by a team official on Tuesday who requested mystery. An official of the Sahara Group though termed this as "market gossip."

If he plays, Clarke would be available for the last eight matches, from May 1. Australia ends their actions in the West Indies on April 27. The IPL 5 begins on April 4 and runs till May 27.

In another development, Pune Warriors captain Sourav Ganguly said on Wednesday that the key to the team's success would be how they bat. "Our bowling unit is good and I think overall we have an honest squad. The difference between leading this team and leading India in a series is that here the squad has previously been picked," he said.

Having relinquished Bengal captaincy - it requires too much of participation, he said - Ganguly didn't commit to helming Warriors next season either. "That's too far away and since I quit international cricket in 2008, I have been taking it season by season." Ganguly was speaking after a promotional event.

Before the IPL, Ganguly long-established he would play for Bengal in the national T20 championship for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Mumbai from March 23 to 27. Ganguly will play beneath Manoj Tiwary's captaincy. Bengal is the reigning champions.

Runako Morton West Indies batsman killed in road accident

Runako Morton, the West Indies batsman, has died in a road accident on Sunday, police have confirmed. Morton, 33, crashed into a utility pole on the Solomon Hochoy Highway in Chase Village in central Trinidad.

He was on his way home from a cricket match, and was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The accident occurred at around 11pm local time. When news spread about his death, many of his team-mates posted condolence messages on Twitter, like Wavell Hinds: "Gone far too soon brother Runako. I will treasure the great memories for sure. R.I.P. God knows best." Rayad Emrit, Morton's Trinidad team-mate, tweeted: "R.I.P. Morton. You'll always be remembered buddy. Gone but NEVER forgotten. We miss you bro."

Julian Hunte, the president of the West Indies Cricket Board, sent his condolences: "Runako's passing, still in the prime of life, leaves us all in shock," Hunte said. "He will be remembered as a fierce competitor on the field who gave no quarter whether he was playing for West Indies, Leeward Islands, Nevis or Trinidad and Tobago,"

Morton played 15 Tests and 56 ODIs for West Indies, with his last appearance for his country coming against Australia in a Twenty20 international in 2010. He underachieved as a Test batsman, scoring 573 runs at an average of 22.03 with four half-centuries. He had a better record as a one-day player, scoring 1519 runs at an average of 33.75 with two centuries and ten fifties.

Morton's career was blotted by disciplinary breaches. He was expelled from the West Indian Academy in July 2001, and a year later was called up to the injury-plagued West Indies squad as a replacement for Marlon Samuels. He pulled out of the ICC Champions Trophy in September 2002, after lying about the death of his grandmother. His career slipped further when he was arrested (though released without charge) in January 2004, following a stabbing incident.
