Stars such as Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Kieron Pollard, Daniel Vettori and Kevin O' Brien look set to play in the first version of the Sri Lanka Premier League. The winner of the event will be eligible for the Airtel Champions League Twenty20.
According to the reporter, seven provinces - Basnahira, Kandurata, Nagenahira, Ruhuna, Uthura, Uva and Wayamba - will characteristic in the first edition. Domestic players will stand for their own provinces, while team will have a mix of Sri Lankan and international players.
However, in difference to the Indian Premier League's high profile auction, international players will be assigning to teams by the Sri Lankan national selection committee.
Four of the seven teams will qualify for the semi-finals after playing each other once in the event. Each team will have an utmost of 18 players, with the playing XI consisting of a minimum of seven Sri Lankan players and a maximum of four internationals. Former Sri Lankan cricketers will be coaching the teams.
According to the report, the Sri Lanka Premier League establishments have previously approach the Board of Control for Cricket in India in a bid to secure the contribution of Indian players.
The BCCI has previously decided in principal to the idea, providing there is no divergence with India's international and domestic schedule. Singapore-based Somerset Entertainment will run the league. It has bought the rights for five years.
